SAMSUNG MAINTENANCE MODE

Entrusting your phone to a repairer is often a source of fear, and rightly so. Samsung is aware of this, and at the end of the year began rolling out Maintenance Mode, a privacy-preserving function for certain Galaxy devices, following a successful pilot programme in South Korea and a launch in China.

This mode "can reduce the anxiety of users handing over their personal devices for repair by allowing users to block access to personal data such as photos, messages and contacts," Samsung said in a statement. "Everything in our lives, from credit card information to family photos, happens on our phones. Maintenance Mode provides additional assurance that Galaxy users can maintain their privacy even if they give their phone to someone else." To do this, simply select Settings > Battery and device care > Maintenance mode > Turn on, then restart your smartphone. Once restarted, all personal information, including photos, documents and messages, will be restricted.

Launched in South Korea, the privacy feature was first tested on the South Korean Galaxy 21 series in July and rolled out in China last September. It is due to be gradually rolled out worldwide on models running Android 13 and One UI 5 - the stable version of its Android 13-based OS. The firm said that "maintenance mode is available on select Samsung Galaxy devices running ONE UI 5 or later, including the Galaxy S21 (released in late January 2021) and S22 (released in early February 2022) series.
